A Realistic Indian Weight Loss Diet Plan (Approx. 1200 kcal)

By Poorva · Published

Search "Indian diet plan for weight loss" and you'll find a hundred versions of the same 1200-calorie chart. Here's one too — but with the context most of them leave out. This is a general educational template. Your calorie and nutrient needs depend on your age, height, weight, activity level, medical conditions, and goals, and a plan should always be personalised by a qualified nutrition professional.

Use this as a structure to borrow from, not a prescription to follow to the gram. If you want something built around your body and your routine, that's exactly what the coaching programmes are for.

On waking up

Choose one:

  • 1 glass warm water
  • 1 glass warm water with lemon
  • Jeera water (soaked overnight and boiled)

These support hydration and a gentle start to the day. They are not fat-burning drinks — no morning shot melts fat.

Breakfast (choose one)

  • Vegetable poha + 1 bowl curd
  • Vegetable upma + 1 boiled egg or 50 g paneer
  • Oats vegetable chilla + mint chutney
  • 2 moong dal chillas + curd
  • Vegetable oats + roasted chana
  • 2 idlis + sambar
  • Besan chilla stuffed with paneer
  • Greek yogurt + fruit + seeds

Notice that every option has a protein anchor. A carb-only breakfast is the single most common reason people are ravenous by 11am — more on that in why you feel hungry all the time.

Mid-morning

Choose one:

  • 1 seasonal fruit
  • Coconut water
  • Buttermilk
  • Plain chaas

Lunch

Build the plate in four parts:

  • 2 rotis (or 1 cup cooked rice)
  • Salad — cucumber, tomato, carrot, onion, beetroot.
  • Any vegetable — bhindi, lauki, tori, cabbage, cauliflower, beans, mixed veg, palak, mushroom.
  • One protein — vegetarian: dal, rajma, chole, soya chunks, paneer, tofu. Non-vegetarian: 100–120 g grilled chicken, fish, or eggs.

Evening snack

Choose one:

  • Roasted chana
  • Sprouts chaat
  • Fruit + a handful of nuts
  • Makhana
  • Greek yogurt
  • Boiled corn
  • Tea or coffee without excess sugar + roasted peanuts

Dinner

Choose one:

  • 2 rotis + sabzi + protein
  • Khichdi + curd
  • Dal + vegetable + 1 roti
  • Paneer bhurji + salad
  • Tofu stir-fry + roti
  • Vegetable soup + paneer or chicken
  • Egg bhurji + roti
  • Grilled chicken or fish + vegetables

Hydration

Aim for 2–3 litres of water daily, adjusting for your activity level and the weather.

Lifestyle habits that do the heavy lifting

Remember

A 1200 kcal diet is not suitable for everyone. Many adults need significantly more energy depending on body size, activity level, age, and health conditions. Eating too little for too long usually ends in fatigue, muscle loss, and a rebound.

The best weight loss diet is one that is personalised, nutritionally balanced, and sustainable — not simply the one with the fewest calories.
